What makes a good watercolor painting?

A good watercolor painting reveals the unique characteristics of the medium: transparency, spontaneity, and freshness of color, in addition to the formal qualities of composition and technique (handling of paint). However, there must be something else about the painting that draws you into it. This is the artist's interpretation of the subject. Interpretation gives new eyes to the participant, a living presence which cannot be explained but shines out and enriches both the artist who created it and the viewer who responds.
